The Wicked Wizard of Oz ends one week today!

At 1.00pm GMT one week from today, The Wicked Wizard of Oz reaches the end of its run, on Monday 3rd Oztober.

Will it fund? Who knows. What I do know is that currently over £200 needs to be pledged every day until the end of the Kickstarter's run otherwise it most definitely won't happen.

So if you think a grimdark gamebook inspired by L. Frank Baum's children's classic could be your thing, or if you know of someone else you would enjoy it, then check out the Kickstarter project page and spread the word!

Thank you.

Steampunk goes Dieselpunk!

In two days' time, THE WICKED WIZARD OF OZ launches on Kickstarter.

In THE WICKED WIZARD OF OZ you step into Dorothy’s silver shoes and become the hero of the story, taking on the role of either Dorothy Gale herself, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, or the Lion. You decide which path to take, which risks to brave, and even which of the strange inhabitants of Oz, you will meet along the way, to engage in battle.

Success is by no means certain and you may well fail to complete the adventure at your first attempt. However, with experience, skill, and maybe even a little luck, each new attempt should bring you closer to your ultimate goal.

THE WICKED WIZARD OF OZ will be illustrated by Kev Crossley, a very talented artist already known to fans of ALICE'S NIGHTMARE IN WONDERLAND, who is moving away from Alice's Steampunk aesthetic to more of a Dieselpunk look for this book.

Kev's character designs and penmanship are remarkable, and we are very lucky - and thrilled! - to have him joining us on our journey to the Marvellous Land of Oz! Just check out these sketches for the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Lion.

In addition, the first 20 people who pledge to receive a physical copy of the THE WICKED WIZARD OF OZ at the DOROTHY reward level or above (so not including the WIZARD orSCRAPS level rewards, unless they are selected as add-ons) will receive a pair of Emerald City-style, green-tinted, Dieselpunk goggles!
They're what everyone's wearing in the Emerald City these days!

They're what everyone's wearing in the Emerald City these days!
So put 1.00pm on Saturday 3rd September in your diary, and maybe I'll see you, somewhere over the rainbow...

Happy Anniversary Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland!

Kickstarter kindly emailed me today to let me know that a year ago Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland funded, thanks to you! And what a year it's been!
Working with Kev Crossley for the first time, creating the first in what I hope will become a new series of gamebooks, printer delays, books shipped from Eastern Europe the day before the launch, a unique deck of playing cards created by Saskia Powys, a colouring book that's been phenomenally successful in the United States, and an awards nomination. And then today I was sent these bookmark mock-ups, created by a gamebooks fan!

Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland has received 31 5-star reviews on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, but there's always room for more. ;-)
And what was I working on today, a year on from Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland funding? Why, only the second in the series!
The Kickstarter for The Wicked Wizard of Oz will launch on Saturday 1st October 2016 - or should that be Oztober?

Why fans of Pax Britannia should back the Shakespeare Vs Cthulhu Kickstarter

There are just four days left to run for the Shakespeare Vs Cthulhu Kickstarter, but why should fans of Steampunk stories (such as my Pax Britannia novels) back the project?

Well, how about because the anthology will feature brand new short stories by SHARKPUNK contributors, Royal Occultist writer Josh Reynolds and Young Sherlock Holmes scribe Andrew Lane?

And don't forget, everyone who backers the Kickstarter will receive a bonus short story digital download.

So don't delay, and back the Kickstarter today!

In White Rabbit, dandy, detective and adventurer Ulysses Quicksilver journeys into a world of madness and murder, meeting some sinisterly familiar characters along the way.

So what are you waiting for? ;-)

2 days to go until Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland goes live!

Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland is a brand new adventure gamebook with a dark Steampunk twist. To give you an idea of just what that means, here's the first draft of the introduction to the adventure... (click to enlarge)

“You’re late! Wake up!”
Alice woke with a start and sat up, blinking in surprise and looking about her in bewilderment. It was a balmy summer’s afternoon and she was sitting beside a river, the long grass that had formed her bed dotted with daisies. The waters gurgled softly as they passed by on their way downstream.
Something about the scene seemed very familiar.
“Don’t just sit there! Get up! You’re late!” came the shrill voice again.
The hot weather making her feel sleepy and dull-witted, Alice’s gaze followed the sound to its source. There, standing in the shade of a chestnut tree, was a white rabbit.
But this wasn’t just any white rabbit. This particular rabbit was dressed in the manner of an English gentleman – jacket, waistcoat and all. The rabbit’s ears were a little threadbare, the stuffing poking out through holes worn in the skin, and as it tilted its head to one side to observe her with its glassy pink eyes, Alice thought she heard a grating of gears.
Alice started to her feet, as it flashed through her mind that, once upon a time, she has seen something like this rabbit, wearing a waistcoat and carrying a pocket-watch, on some previous occasion. But there was no timepiece clutched in the rabbit’s paws this time.
“Who are you to say I’m late when you are not even carrying a pocket-watch?” Alice asked, not one to be outdone by an animal that looked like nothing more than a taxidermist’s test subject.
The rabbit said nothing, but simply unbuttoned its waistcoat, and Alice gasped as her former cockiness was consumed by gut-wrenching terror. Where the rabbit’s stomach should have been, a huge watch ticked – a clock large enough to fill the cavity from ribcage to pelvis – raw and ragged scrags of meat poking between the wire stitches that bound watch and rabbit together.
“How can I be late,” Alice asked the rabbit, “when I don’t even know what it is I’m late for?”
She was suddenly aware of the wind having picked up, as scuds of cloud raced each other across the sky, a sky which had changed from sapphire blue to a seething, bloody claret colour.
“You are needed in Wonderland,” the White Rabbit informed her, the twitching of its nose accompanied by a mechanical whirring sound.
“Wonderland?” There was something familiar about that name, Alice was sure of it, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.
“It’s the Queen of Hearts. The whole realm has suffered the ravages of her tyrannical reign, and if you thought things were bad before, they are considerably worse now. It’s a miracle I managed to escape her Tick-Tock Men.”
“Before?” Alice whispered in a daze. “Tick-Tock Men?”
“Yes, Tick-Tock Men! How else do you think I ended up like this?” the rabbit said, looking down at his stomach and the ticking timepiece embedded within what little flesh remained there.
Alice stared at the creature in dumfounded amazement before finally finding her voice again. “Why are you telling me this? What do you expect me to do about it?”
“Why?” gasped the rabbit, in incredulity. “We need you, Alice. Wonderland needs you.”
“But what do you need me to do?”
“We need you to kill the Queen, of course.”
“Kill the Queen?” Alice echoed. “But why me?”
The White Rabbit gave an exasperated sigh and took a deep breath, in an attempt to compose itself, before speaking again.

“Because it’s your nightmare!”

If that sounds like your sort of thing (and if you're a fan of my Ulysses Quicksilver Pax Britannia novels then, let's face it, it probably is) you should definitely check out the Kickstarter page and plan your pledge.

The Return of Ulysses Quicksilver?

Now don't get too over-excited. This is just a possibility at the moment, but talks have been taking place about possibly publishing a brand new Ulysses Quicksilver Pax Britannia novel. However, if such a thing is going to happen it's going to be down to the support of the fans. That's right, we're talking about running a Pax Britannia Kickstarter.

If you would be interested in backing such a project, you can show your support by commenting on this post on Facebook, or by replying to this blog post.

If you need reminding how cool the world of Pax Britannia and Ulysses Quicksilver really is* fan of the series Rockula Bacchus has posted this tribute on YouTube.

* Not that I'm biased or anything. ;-)

Clemency Slaughter - The Last Hour

The Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath Kickstarter has one hour to run and clearly isn't going to make its £7,500 funding level.

But the good news is that more people are discovery Clemency all the time which means the likelihood of us trying this again in a few weeks or months is ever more likely.

So keep spreading the word and hopefully, one day, Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath will see the light of day after all...

Pax Britannia and Nerd Vs World

I enjoyed a most pleasant evening on Tuesday, in Oxford, taking part in the recording of the latest Nerd Vs World podcast. I had been invited by Mr Simon 'Spindles' Potthast, whom I met at the Sci-Fi Weekender*. Also in attendance were Mr Brendan Gylee, whose baby Nerd Vs World really is (and master of the hot drinks cabinet), and Mr Ady Wilce, who supplied some most welcome Yum Yums that kept us** energised during the course of the evening.

We ended up talking for a good couple of hours about everything from Star Wars chopsticks and retro kids TV to the Clemency Slaughter Kickstarter, Pax Britannia (and Steampunk in general) and must-see movies***. You can listen to the podcast here.

The Nerd Vs World podcasters: (from l-r) Ady, Brendan and Spindles.

The guys have very kindly offered to have me back again, at some point in the future, an offer that I plan to take them up on.

The evening's musical interlude was provided by The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, who also wrote this.

* In the video/slideshow, he's the one dressed as Professor Severus Snape.

** Well, me.

*** I was surprised none of the guys had seen Gareth Edwards' sublime Monsters. If you've not seen it, get hold of a copy and do so without further delay!

Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath - Competition Time!

A while ago I threatened to run some sort of competition or other if (or more accurately when) I ended up with both 1,000 followers on Twitter and 1,000 friends on Facebook.

Well that magic number was exceeded a while ago now (as of writing I have 1,018 followers on Twitter and 1,030 Facebook friends) so I thought it was about time I made good on my promise.

Your Part of the Bargain

I want you to do all you can to promote the Kickstarter project I am currently running with the artist Tom Brown and publisher Ian Whates, Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath. I don't care how you do it - blog posts, social media campaigns, YouTube videos, get in mentioned in the press, on the radio, on TV! - just do whatever you can to get word out to the masses about this exciting adventure in publishing!

You have until the end of the month (11:59pm on Sunday 31 March) to enter - in other words ten days - and email me a link to whatever it is you've produced at info@jonathangreenauthor.com.

Be imaginative, be creative, be prolific, be persistent! But whatever you do, to be eligible for the big prize, you must let me know about it.

Our Part of the Bargain

The three of us (Jon, Tom and Ian) will decide who has mounted the most effective campaign and, as long as the project funds on 13 April, you will be invited to the grand London launch as our guest, with all that that entails (book, goodie bag, drinks reception, etc.) but without having to stump up £100 for the privilege yourself. (You must arrange and pay for your travel to London.)

And that's it!

So check out the Clemency Slaughter Kickstarter page, Facebook page, and blog, get thinking, and good luck!

Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath

Today - 13th March 2013 - marks the beginning of the Big Push for the Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath Kickstarter.

Artist Tom Brown, publisher Ian Whates, and myself, want to bring you the tale of Miss Clemency Slaughter, her ill-fated family, and the legacy of Lord Daedalus Drummond D'Eath that awaits whoever is lucky (or unlucky) enough to inherit in the end. But we can only accomplish this task with your support, via Kickstarter.

We have a host of wonderful rewards on offer, including original artwork, invitations to a launch party, signed books, and bespoke jewellery. Bids start at only £2 and there's even going to be a digital version of this macabre picture book, as long as we achieve our funding goal of £7,500.

So now it's up to you. Please 'Like' our Facebook page, pledge your support via the Kickstarter page, and then tell all your friends via the medium of social media - and not just today, but every day! That's how we'll draw in the new backers we'll need to make this project happen.

We have until 1.00pm (1300 hours) on the 13th April to achieve our goal, or Clemency Slaughter and the Legacy of D'Eath may never see the light of day at all...
